Gordon Red Ancient Tartan Fabric
The Gordon Red Ancient Tartan Fabric offers a soft, historically inspired take on one of Scotland’s most powerful clan tartans, blending muted reds and earthy tones in a traditional sett. Produced from 100% Scottish acrylic wool at our own mill in Selkirk, Scotland, this fabric combines an authentic clan pattern with the durability and easy care that today’s makers and wearers expect.
Whether you’re commissioning a bespoke kilt, sewing a sash or shawl, upholstering a piece of furniture, or working on any project rooted in Highland tradition, Gordon Red Ancient Tartan Fabric delivers a distinctive pattern with genuine ties to one of Scotland’s great clans.
The Story Behind the Tartan
Clan Gordon is one of the most powerful and historically significant clans in Scotland, rooted primarily in the Lowlands and the northeast region of Aberdeenshire. First recorded in Berwickshire in the 12th century, the Gordons became associated with Aberdeenshire from the 14th century onward, after Sir Adam, Lord of Gordon, was granted the Lordship of Strathbogie by King Robert the Bruce in recognition of his service in battle.
As a clan, the Gordons were formidable warriors who waged war against neighboring clans, and their chief carried the striking title “The Cock of the North.” The Marquis of Huntly, a senior Gordon figure, served as Governor of Inverness Castle, and in 1562 his deputy famously refused Mary, Queen of Scots entry to the fortress. The Gordon Highlanders regiment was raised in 1794, with Jane, Duchess of Gordon, said to have kissed each new recruit as he enlisted to help secure volunteers. The clan seat is Huntly Castle, and the chiefs hold the prestigious title Duke of Gordon.
The Ancient designation reflects the softer, more muted color treatment applied to this sett, echoing the natural dyes historically used in tartan weaving, in contrast to the bolder, more saturated tones of the Modern colorway or the faded look of the Weathered version.

Why Choose This Tartan Fabric?
Authentic Scottish Weaving – Every yard of this fabric is produced at our own mill in Selkirk, in the heart of the Scottish Borders, using traditional weaving techniques refined over generations. You’re not buying a mass-produced imitation — you’re buying fabric woven with genuine Scottish craftsmanship.
Powerful Clan Heritage – Few tartans carry as storied a history as Gordon, tied to one of Scotland’s most influential clans and its long record of battles, castles, and regiments.
Soft, Versatile Colorway – The muted Ancient tones give this tartan a subtle, wearable palette that pairs easily with complementary jackets, sporrans, and accessories, without sacrificing visual character.
Flexible Quantities – Sold by the running yard in nine different quantity options, you can order exactly what you need — from half a yard for a small accessory project to a full eight yards for a complete traditional kilt or great plaid.
Durable, Easy-Care Material – The acrylic wool construction offers excellent color retention and resistance to wear, while remaining easier to care for than pure wool, making it a practical choice for garments and accessories that will see regular use.
